SPRING FAIR AND TAG SALE. Bring the whole family to Bethesda Nursery School's annual spring fair and tag sale on Saturday, May 7, from 10 am – 2 pm (rain or shine). The tag sale begins at 9 am. The tag sale will has many great items including britax car seats, exer-saucers, tricycles, games, puzzles, toys, doll houses, booster seats, baby and kid clothes, shoes, boots, sandals and many other treasures! In addition, this fantastic family event provides entertainment including magician, live children's music, games, moon bounce, plant sale, bake sale, and refreshments. Admission is free. Tickets must be purchased for activities. All proceeds benefit the Bethesda Nursery School scholarship fund. Join the fun at the Bethesda Nursery School playground, 305 St. Ronan Street, New Haven. Home Depot Kids Workshops

This is old news to most of you, but worth the reminder!

The first Saturday of every month, your local Home Depot hosts a Kids Workshop for ages 5-12.

The Home Depot's Kids Workshops offer useful projects including the creation of toolboxes, fire trucks and mail organizers, as well as more educational projects, such as a window birdhouse, bughouse or Declaration of Independence frame kit.

The workshops teach children do-it-yourself skills and tool safety, while at the same time helping to instill a sense of accomplishment. Additionally, this fun time allows for quality one-on-one time between adults and children.

In addition to the newly constructed project kit, each child receives a kid-sized orange apron, similar to The Home Depot associates' aprons, and an achievement pin.

The Painted Pomegranate Offers an Unforgettable Wilderness Survivors Summer Program for Kids

Looking for a summer experience your 8- 13-year-old children will never forget? The week-long Wilderness Survivors Camp, offered by the Painted Pomegranate, is the answer!

The Painted Pomegranate (The Pom), the Jewish Community Center of Greater New Haven’s (JCC) creative learning and play center, has planned a remarkable week of fantastic fun and learning that will take place on the JCC’s 40-acre campus at 360 Amity Road, Woodbridge. Children will learn how to make fire by rubbing sticks together, track foxes and coyotes, make survival shelters, learn how not to get lost and much more! All kids should be prepared to get dirty and have fun!

New Haven Musician Sets Out to Bring His Dinosaur Music to the World Stage

NEW HAVEN – Local composer and orchestra manager for the Yale Symphony Orchestra, Brian Robinson, has been entertaining area toddlers and pre-school audiences for four years with his dinosaur-themed wind quintet, The Cretaceous Quintet. Now, with the help of a fund-raising website called Kickstarter, he is setting out to produce a professional recording, to be released digitally on iTunes and in CD formats.

The album, titled “Roar!”, will feature songs heard at the groups live performances at the Peabody Museum, including “It’s Not Easy to Dance with Deinonychus”, “The Alphabet of Dinosaurs”, and “Five Little Raptors”. New, never-before-heard songs will also be included. One, “Still Life with Torosaurus”, is inspired by the prominent statue outside the Peabody.

“This is a truly New Haven-borne venture” says Robinson. “I wrote our first songs on a whim for my son’s local nursery school [United Community Nursery School on Temple Street], and within two months we were playing at Dinosaur Days at the Peabody Museum. We’re in our fourth year of bringing dinosaur-themed joy to kids.”

Fund-raising for the project will begin on July 1st, and end on August 25th. Brian hopes to raise $3,000 in that time through the innovative web fundraising platform, Kickstarter. In order to acquire pledges, Robinson is giving out digital and physical copies of the album to donors, as well as signed copies of original sheet music.

The most unique pledge gift, however, is the opportunity to appear on the album itself. For a $40 pledge, you or your child can “Roar” into a microphone, send Brian a copy of the recording, and that “Roar” will wind up on the album, complete with an album credit in the liner notes.

We would like to formally invite you to a belated Earth Day get-together on Tuesday, April 27 between the hours of 8:45 am and 3:30 pm at the new Painted Pomegranate. We will be crafting in an earthy way, and making treasures for your children to cherish!

The Painted Pomegranate is a new creative center for children. Fix The Playground Gates At East Rock Park!

The playground at East Rock Park (College Woods) is heavily used but for as long as I can remember, the latches at the two gates have never worked. This ain't good, folks. It's a safety issue for the kids who play there and a peace of mind issue for the parents of the kids. Well, finally an issue on the subject has been opened at See Click Fix. Please Click Here and then say "I want this fixed too!" to let this posting gain some momentum. Odds are good that with a certain critical mass, the damned fence will get fixed.

Toddler To Do List

A friend of mine (and fellow blogger mom) made up a list of things to do with her toddler when she was pregnant with her second child. It was winter and she was constantly exhausted, and rather than putting on a movie every afternoon, she decided to do a little research. The result was this list. As I mentioned in my last post, I am also pregnant...in the winter...with a toddler. That's a sure recipe for boredom. I've referred to this list many a day and it has saved everyone in the house. And now, my friends...I share the list with you. Enjoy the warmth of your house and a fun afternoon with your toddler!

•Bake, bake, bake!
•Play with pizza dough/make pizza (rolling pin)
•Wrap old toys w/ lots of wrapping paper/ribbon
•Premade cookie dough/large sprinkles
•3 drops food coloring in bathtub
•Plant radishes/water them
•Meals of all one color foods
•Collect rocks/sticks/leaves. Make a collage
•Play hide and seek with stuffed animal. Hiding spots get progressively harder
•Make fake mailbox. Create letters for family members/toys, mail them, open box and deliver them
•Give (hard plastic) baby bath in large Tupperware. Have towel for baby
•Pretend cook rice. Measure, dump in bowl, stir, etc.
•Pretend to be a robot. Respond when nose is pushed, ear is pulled, arm is moved, etc. Respond same way to each action
•Play doctor with doll. First, parent be Dr./child be parent to doll. Go through a standard check up (weigh doll, heartbeat, check ears/eyes). Then let child be Dr.
•Set up fake grocery store. Go shopping with cart. Collect money, bag groceries, put them “away” on shelves of toy kitchen.
•Make objects with play dough. Explain objects
•Create ramp off of sofa/chair. Roll round objects down it (fruit, ball, toy cars). Let child pick objects. Explain round vs. flat/square.
•Feed dolls in toy high chair. Encourage child to talk to dolls. “Mmmm, that’s good, good job” etc. Use bibs during meals and washcloths after meals.
•After diaper change (lying down), say “where should I plant this kiss?....Ahhh, hand” (kiss hand). Ask again but let child answer or point. Name body part before kissing it.
•Sing “If you’re happy and you know it” but create different verses with new emotions (if you’re sad/shed a tear. If you’re angry/stomp your feet, sleepy/say nuh-nights etc)
•Make birdfeeder with pine cone, butter, oatmeal. Hang in tree by window
•Make caterpillar out of egg carton, pipe cleaners, paint
•Make puppets from paper plates and popsicle sticks, yarn for hair. Create happy/sad expressions.
•String multi-colored ziti or cereal on yarn to make necklaces and bracelets
•Make paper bag animal puppets with lunch size paper bags and construction paper
•Make blanket forts
•Create a “today’s weather” chart with a sun, clouds, rain clouds, wind etc. Discuss weather for the day and put applicable item on chart depending on weather for that day

OWC Playgroup This Week

We just received word from the church that they will need our usual playgroup space on Friday to set up for their holiday fair this weekend. We thought that, rather than cancel playgroup altogether, we would just plan to meet at Bassett Park and make this a BYOSnack day. So far, the weather report says it should be clear, but pretty chilly. Hopefully it will stay that way! If the forecast changes, I'll be sure to post an update.

For those of you who are new to playgroup, Bassett Park (aka Larry's Playground) is located on the corner of Waite St. and Ridge Rd. To view a map, click here. We'll set up at the picnic bench by the sandbox.

After posting about the Upper State Street Tree Lighting, I thought I'd better find out when New Haven is having their annual tree lighting. It's a good thing I did, because it is this week!

The City of New Haven will present its annual holiday tree lighting ceremony on the historic Green Thursday, December 3. The free family-fun event kicks off downtown’s holiday season at 5:30pm with live performances by Betsy Ross Arts Magnet School, Fair Haven School and Unity Boys Choir. The program will be co-hosted by WTNH News Channel 8/MyTV 9’s own Gil Simmons and Desiree Fontaine. Santa, Ronald McDonald and other special guests will lend a hand to illuminate the tree.

From 4-8pm there will be a host of free activities for children to enjoy– carousel rides, tug & train rides, letter writing to Santa with an express mail box for deliveries to the North Pole and the opportunity to be part of the “Alpine Safari” by riding on one of four mechanical animals, free of charge. There will also be holiday crafts, popcorn and free hayrides around the Green for all to enjoy. After the tree is lit, children can visit and take photos with Santa until 7:30PM.

Gilbert Company that still run beautifully after 50 years. Gilbert purchased, redesigned and produced American Flyer trains relatively late in his career. It was also relatively late in the history of American railroads. Airports and highways were reshaping American geography. Gilbert’s trains recollected past power and glory of rail. Gilbert's trains recollected the power and glory of his life. Woodstock, Connecticut - Roseland Cottage conducts its eighth annual holiday tour of the museum on Sunday, December 6, 12:00-4:00 p.m. Admission is free. Donations are welcomed.

This special tour highlights the traditions, food and festivities that were a part of the Bowen family holiday celebration. During this once-a-year program, costumed interpreters lead visitors through the first-floor of the museum, decorated with the finest Victorian trimmings, and share holiday stories from the written accounts of the Bowen family Christmas of 1887. In the adjacent Carriage Barn, the Roseland Cottage gift shop is open, and refreshments and readings from Dickens’ A Christmas Carol are available.

Appointments for group tours (10 or more people) of the holiday-decorated museum can made through January 10 for a fee of $5 per person. Call 860-928-4074 for more information.

New this year – The Woodstock Academy’s Project Graduation Committee holds a holiday sale in the Roseland Cottage carriage barn. Wreaths, holiday treats and baked good are available. All proceeds from the sale support the Woodstock Academy’s 2010 “Class Night" celebration, an all night, chaperoned, substance-free celebration for the graduating seniors.

Apparently 1 million Maclaren strollers were recalled today for a faulty hinge that actually lopped off tiny kid fingers. Comforting, huh? If you are wondering what you should do if you have one of the recalled models (Volo, Triumph, Quest Sport, Quest Mod, Techno XT, Techno XLR, Twin Triumph, Twin Techno and Easy Traveller), Maclaren is telling people to immediately stop using the product and contact them to obtain a kit which includes hinge covers.

I found this cool website that tells you when you can watch the space shuttle fly by. Click Here and select your city. Once you do that, you'll find a list of dates and the times when you'll be able to see the shuttle. It even gives you the coordinates and the duration of time it will be visible. Here is New Haven's Schedule.

FYI: From what I hear, you should try to find a date and time with a longer duration, because it can be difficult to spot. It has been described as a bright horizontal line that looks larger than a plane and moves quickly and steadily.

Pretty cool, huh? Anyone know if the Yale telescopes might be open to the public so we can get an even better view?

Climate Change Rally

Come to the New Haven Green for a climate change rally this Saturday, October 24th. If you're worried about climate change, please consider stopping by to show your
support! Rain or Shine! (They will use the roofed stage on the green for sheltering kids and art projects, in the event of rain.)

What: Rally to raise awareness about climate change

Main Event:
At 3:50 PM the coalition of rally organizers will help to form a large
"350" comprised of participants standing in formation across the
Green. This display will be photographed from above, posted on the
www.350.org website, and sent to elected officials to draw attention
to the long term goal of returning the earth's atmosphere to 350 ppm
carbon dioxide following the clean energy transition.

Also Featuring:
Live music, free coffee donated by Blue State, baked goods donated by
SoNo Baking Company, facepainting and art-projects for kids, and
speeches and information from local environmental groups.

Why 350?:
Scientists say that 350 parts per million carbon dioxide in the
atmosphere is the safe limit for humanity. The bad news is we are
currently at 390 ppm. The good news is there are lots of ways we can
return the atmosphere to below the safe limit. More information at

Okay, people, here's the deal. This is not your regular old, run-of-the-mill, touch a few trucks kind of touch-a-truck event. This is the mother of all touch-a-truck events. You skeptics out there may think that I am overreacting, but I assure you, I am not. We're talking every construction and municipal vehicle you can think of (and almost all that my truck obsessed 2-year-old can name--almost...). We're talking tractors, school buses, street cleaners, fire engines, back hoes, MAC trucks--everything you can think of--all just sitting in a giant parking lot, waiting for your kid to climb, touch, and honk them.

Clearly my kid loved it so much that its return is the most exciting thing to happen to me in months.

(Oh my God, that is so sad.)

We'll see you there! I'll be the mom wiping drool away from my kid's mouth. I'm not kidding. It's going to be like giving Homer Simpson a friggin' donut.

Baby Sign Language Classes

Pediatrics Plus, a North Haven pediatric office, will be offering a baby sign language class designed for infants/toddlers up to 3 years old with their parents. The class will be taught by Eileen Baker, who has taught many baby sign classes around Connecticut.

The class will be held over three Saturday mornings - Sep 19 and 26 and Oct 3. The cost is $35 for all three sessions (you are required to attend all three, but the price remains the same). It is open to the public, but you do need to call to register. To register or for more information, parents can call our

Pediatrics Plus is located at 13 Peck Street in North Haven.

Movie In The Park!

Come out this Friday, September 4th, to the College Woods section of East Rock Park for the first (of hopefully many) outdoor movies in East Rock.

The inaugural movie is...*drumroll*...The Princess Bride! The movie starts at 8:00 p.m. but feel free to come early, bring a picnic basket, and enjoy dinner and a movie under the stars!

Oh yeah--did I mention that it's free? Cause it's totally free!

As it explains in our tag line above, New Haven Kids was started because I heard too many CT moms complaining that they were googling their lives away to find something to do with their children. I wanted so badly for someone to start a website or blog to help us all out; a one-stop-shop of sorts. When I couldn't find one, I started one myself (recruiting some of my mom friends in the process). My one goal was to help parents like me to get out of their rut...

This is why I am so excited to tell you about another new blog out there for CT parents with young children: kidHaven. Kim, kidHaven's blogging mom, posts some great info about the area, in addition to fun at-home activities and craft ideas.

Lowes Build and Grow clinics

Lowes is hosting 2 awesome Build and Grow clinics. Sign up to attend and not only will your kids get to make a cool project, they get a cutesy little apron and set of goggles too. (Did I just say cutesy? Yes I did.) First one takes place tomorrow at 10 am!

Tantrum Salon

There is a new children's hair salon in Hamden called Tantrum Salon and we LOVE them!

I took my son for his first haircut last week and not only did he get an adorable cut (he looks like such a big boy!), but the ladies at Tantrum were amazing. They met us at the door with warm smiles and did whatever they could to help him feel comfortable. The woman who cut his hair offered him a "super hero cape" (with the body of a cartoon super hero on the front so his head looked like it was on the super hero's body), and when he didn't like that it covered his hands, she quickly flipped it around so it looked like a real super hero cape. His stylist then worked at lightening speed and was completely finished in about 10 minutes. At the end, he got a cute little certificate saying that he was brave during his first haircut. He also got a lollipop and a bottle of bubbles, which he was understandably more impressed by than the certificate.

Now let me tell you what I really liked about this place. We all know the chain kid salons where there are crazy colors everywhere and music and TVs and little rocket chairs for them to sit in. These places might work like a charm for your kid, but I knew mine would want to jump right out of his rocket and run around to see all the excitement. He would be totally overstimulated. This is not Tantrum. This place looks like a real salon. Sure, there is a play area in front, kid's books in the waiting area, fun capes to wear over their clothes, and TVs at each station should you want your child to watch Elmo to help keep him still (FYI: I did)--but it really felt like a real salon. The decor is nice, clean...and normal. They had regular salon chairs with booster seats and seat belts. I didn't feel like I was tricking him into anything. He knew he was there to get his hair cut (he goes with me every month, after all), and he was fine with it--and if he hadn't been fine with it, there were lollipops and Elmo to help. In other words, it was the best of both worlds.

Our local Music Together teacher, Liz of Musical Folk, is planning a FREE Music Together class on Thursday, August 13th at 9:30 am.

Each semester demo classes will be held for families who wish to preview a class. Whether you’re coming to Music Together for the first time, or you want to return with your new little ones, demos are held approximately 2 to 3 weeks prior to the next semester. Moms, Dad’s, grandparents, and nannies are welcome to attend our demos and our classes. Just come prepared to participate, and to have fun making music and dancing with your child.
